"Our goal is to take care of our customers."
This is the driving force behind everything we do at NYS. What began as idea in the mid-1980’s has evolved into the world’s most efficient structural steel mill.
NYS is comprised of two rolling facilities commonly referred to as Mill 1 and Mill 2. Mill 1 rolls channel (MC, C), angle (L), small wide flange (W) & H-Pile (HP), sheet piling (PZ), and special sections (CZ, CSC). Mill 2 produces large wide flange (W) and H-pile (HP) sections. Both mills combined have an annual capacity of 2.4 million tons of finished product.
To keep a facility of that size running requires a hot metal supply of approximately 2.8 million tons per year. NYS utilizes twin 120 ton Electric Arc Furnaces, 2 ladle furnaces and two continuous casters located at the start of each rolling mill complex.
Obviously, to operate efficiently it is important to ship product in a timely manner. Our shipping department averages 150-200 trucks per day, 30-50 rail loads per day and 3-5 barges per week. Along with Nucor Steel in nearby Hickman, this makes Mississippi County, Arkansas the second largest steel-producing county in the U.S.A., an accomplishment of pride for our 800 employees.
Two of our crowning achievements have been in the areas of quality and environmental stewardship. In 1995 we were awarded the Shingo prize for our relentless pursuit of quality and customer satisfaction. In 1999 NYS was recommended and certified to ISO 9002, and in May 2002 to ISO 9001:2000. In May 2005 NYS was recommended and certified to ISO 14001:1996. These accomplishments were the result of many hours of dedication and hard work.
However, awards and prizes, while nice, are not our measure of success. We measure success by "taking care of customers" and we do that by selling, melting, casting, rolling and shipping the highest quality, lowest cost steel in the world.
